OSA Application to Defense Systems

Course Description

The Open Systems Architecture (OSA) Applications to Defense Systems course provides a fundamental understanding of the complex engineering activities associated with applying OSA to DoD systems. The course will provide how existing open standards such as HOST, SOSA, and FACE are applied to defense systems. It will also provide a focus on how to apply OSA specifically to EW systems. Exercises and demonstrations help reinforce some of the basic concepts presented in the lectures.

Course Content

MODULAR OPEN SYSTEMS APPROACH OVERVIEW

  • MOSA history and current requirements
  • Review of the building blocks of MOSA

APPLYING OSA TO DEFENSE SYSTEMS

  • Discussion on the evolution of defense system architectures and the necessity of open systems
  • Present an example case study to identify the key interfaces and standardization techniques at the system architecture level
  • Review existing open standards which apply to the system level (e.g. HOST, SOSA, CMOSS)
  • How to integrate open standards to develop a complete open system solution (i.e. hardware, software, communication)
  • Challenges of implementing open standards into a fielded solution (i.e. security & safety concerns, IP, and legacy application)

OSA STANDARDS RELATED TO EW SYSTEMS

  • Present an example case study to identify the key interfaces and standardization techniques at the platform architecture level
  • Review existing open standards which apply to the platform level (e.g. SPEAD, VITA 49.2, MORA)
